General

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. The Stenostiridae are a small family which in Asia includes a former member of the fantails (Rhipiduridae) plus the canary-flycatchers from the Muscicapidae. The two Vietnamese species carry the names used at their previous families.

1. The Fairy-Fantail is known as Rẻ quạt 'fan-spokes' or Chim rẻ quạt 'fan-spoke bird' in Vietnamese, reflecting its earlier assignment to the Rhipiduridae.

2. Culicicapa is known as a kind of Chim Đớp ruồi 'fly-snapping bird' (flycatcher). Outside the Muscicapidae, the word is used for Hypothymis monarch flycatchers (Monarchidae), and Philentoma (Vangidae) flycatchers.

Family name

The family name is from Wikipedia. Chích is the general name for warblers of the old Sylviidae assemblage. Tiên means 'fairy'. Together the name means 'fairy warbler'.
