General

Information is from dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin reflects Mandarin pronunciation; for some dialect names, it is no more than a polite fiction. Korean glosses are tentative. Hemipus and Tephrodornis (at one stage classed with the Campephagidae) have recently been placed with the Vangidae, a family of shrike-like birds centred on Africa and Madagascar. Their ornithological names are loan-translations (calques) from English.

The 1927 list of Chinese Birds (35), which contained the earliest suggested Chinese ornithological names, placed both species in the Laniidae and called them 伯劳 bóláo 'shrike'. Chinese names have since followed changes in the English naming. The names used are compact two-character compounds based on , an old name for the shrikes that is now confined mainly to academic or literary contexts.

1. Hemipus: After initially being changed to què-jú 'magpie-shrike' (English 'pied shrike'), the name was later altered to wēng-jú 'flycatcher-shrike' (English 'flycatcher-shrike'). The latter is composed of wēng 'flycatcher' (from Japanese) and 'shrike'.

2. The genus Tephrodornis is known as lín-jú 'forest shrike' based on English 'woodshrike'.

Family name

The family name 钩嘴 gōu-zuǐ-jú kē 'hook-billed shrike' is that given for the Vangidae in A Checklist on the Classification and Distribution of the Birds of the World (4), based on the name of the Hook-billed Vanga (Vanga curviorstris).

This term is not found in ordinary dictionaries. It appears to be a portmanteau of Хөхөө khökhöo 'cuckoo' and Чогчиго chogchig 'shrike'. The orthography (Хөгчих) and pronunciation (khögchikh) are therefore tentative.
