Hemipus, Tephrodornis (earlier classed with the Campephagidae) and Philentoma (earlier classed with the Monarchidae) have recently been added to the Vangidae, a family of shrike-like birds centred on Africa and Madagascar. Thai names are all ornithologically-based.

Thai ornithological names for the Vangidae reflect earlier affiliations:

1. นกเฉี่ยวดง nók cʰìaw doŋ 'jungle snatcher (bird)' is used for Tephrodornis woodshrikes. It is comparable in form to นกเฉี่ยวบุ้ง nók cʰìaw-bûŋ 'caterpillar-snatcher (bird)', the name of the cuckooshrikes of the family Campephagidae, to which Tephrodornis at one time belonged.

2. The genus Hemipus is known as นกเขนน้อย nók kʰĕen-nóaay 'little-robin bird'. Aside from some of the Lalage trillers (also belonging to the Campephagidae), this name is also used for Larvivora robins and Tarsiger and Calliope bush robins (Muscicapidae).

3. The genus Philentoma is named as a kind of นกจับแมลง nók càp-ma-laeeŋ 'insect-catcher (bird)' or 'flycatcher'. This name is used for most kinds of bird which were called 'flycatcher' in English at the time the names were assigned. Other families using this name include the muscicapid flycatchers (Muscicapidae), Hypothymis monarch flycatchers (Monarchidae), and canary-flycatcher (Stenostiridae).

Family name

The family name adopted here is based on the genus name Tephrodornis and effectively means Tephrodornidae.
