General

Information is from dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin reflects Mandarin pronunciation; for some dialect names, it is no more than a polite fiction. Korean glosses are tentative. Comments and corrections welcome. Hover over Green Lettering to see additional information.

Chinese ornithological names for the campephagids are based on foreign models. There are a number of popular names for some species in China, but these tend to be restricted to southern provinces outside of Mandarin-speaking areas.

The campephagids as a whole are sometimes known as 毛虫鸟 máo-chóng-niǎo 'caterpillar bird' because caterpillars form an important part of their diet.

Chinese ornithological names are:

1. 山椒鸟 shān-jiāo-niǎo 'pricklyash bird', used for the minivets (Pericrocotinae), was probably borrowed from Japanese, where 山椒食い sanshō-kui or 'pricklyash-eater' refers to the Ashy Minivet. This name is used in the earliest list of Chinese ornithological names, Birds of China (35) published in 1927.

The Japanese name is a reference to the bird's cry, which resembles the conventional sounds of distress made by a person eating very hot peppers, and has no connection to the actual consumption of pricklyash peppers. Unlike Japanese, Chinese now ornithologically confines the name 山椒鸟 shān-jiāo-niǎo 'pricklyash bird' to the genus Pericrocotus.

2. The subfamily Campephaginae are referred to by a loan-translation (calque) of the English name 'cuckoo-shrike'. This is rendered in a literary rather than colloquial style as juān-jú 'cuckoo shrike', where juān is the short form of one name for the cuckoos, and is an old name for the shrikes that is now confined to academic or literary contexts.
