General

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. Hover over Green Lettering Green lettering at this site hides a tool tip with glosses, further explanations, etc. Hover cursor to reveal. to see additional information.

Hemipus, Tephrodornis (earlier classed with the Campephagidae) and Philentoma (earlier classed with the Monarchidae) have recently been added to the Vangidae, a family of shrike-like birds centred on Africa and Madagascar. All three genera are represented in Vietnam. The names are largely ornithological in nature.

Vietnamese ornithological names for the Vangidae are a result of earlier family affiliations:

1. The woodshrikes (Tephordornis) and flycatcher-shrikes (Hemipus) are both known as Phường chèo nâu 'brown minivet bird'. This reflects their earlier assignment to the Campephagidae (cuckoo-shrikes and minivets). The name is not found in ordinary dictionaries and its use for Tephrodornis and Hemipus possibly owes more to taxonomy than to common usage.

2. The genus Philentoma is classed as a kind of Chim đớp ruồi 'fly-snapping bird' in Vietnamese, reflecting an earlier assignment to the Monarchidae (Monarch flycatchers). Chim đớp ruồi 'fly-snapping bird' is the conventional Vietnamese equivalent of English 'flycatcher' and is mostly used for birds that were called 'flycatchers' in English at the time these names were assigned. In addition to Philentoma, Chim đớp ruồi is used for the muscicapid flycatchers (Muscicapidae) and monarch flycatchers (Monarchidae).

Family name

The Vietnamese family name adopted here is tentative, based on the genus name for Tephrodornis, Phường chèo nâu 'brown minivet bird'. It effectively means Tephrodornidae.
