The Phylloscopidae are a result of the break-up of the large Sylviidae (Old World warbler) assemblage. (Others include the Locustellidae, Acrocephalidae, and Scotocercidae, as well as part of the Sylviidae.)

The Sylviidae tend to be poorly served by vernacular names and naming systems in most languages are largely ornithological in origin. Mongolian is no exception.

Ornithological names

Mongolian names for the Phylloscopidae are as follows:

All genera (Radina, Abrornis, Phylloscopus, and Seicercus) were originally placed with the genus Phylloscopus and thus share the same ornithological name: the nondescript term Дуучшувуу duuch-shuvuu 'songbird', roughly analagous to the English term 'warbler'. Prior to the adoption of the new ornithological names in 2007, this was written as two words (Дууч шувуу duuch shuvuu).

Prior to 2007, the Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus) was given the exceptional name of Цоровдой tsorovdoi. The background of the name is unclear. The word that it most resembles, цоров tsorov, refers to the upper lip of cattle.

Бүхт bükht in Бүхт дуучшувуу bükht duuch-shuvuu (Phylloscopus fuscatus) is a corruption of бүгт bügt 'dark-coloured'.

As usual, there are specific names that are hard to account for, in this case the

Inner Mongolia

In Inner Mongolia, the leaf warblers are known ornithologically as Ногоолдой nogooldoi, based on their greenish colour (ногоо nogoo 'green'). In Mongolia, this name is used for the greenfinch (Fringillidae).

Recently the regularity of naming in Inner Mongolia has been disrupted by the borrowing of some names from ornithological Mongolian.

Named for pattern of striping which resembles that of the Жирх jirkh or Siberian Chipmunk (Tamias sibiricus).

Бүхт bükht is more properly spelt бүгт bügt meaning 'dark-coloured'.

セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae, Locustellidae, and Phylloscopidae. The etymology is unknown. It is written with the ateji 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), characters assigned on the basis of sound only with little or no relation to etymology or meaning.

Бор bor as an adjective means either 'grey, brown, dun', or 'stubborn'. It is used in some bird names as a noun, including names for the nightjars, reed warblers, Reed Parrotbill, and leiothrix. The common thread is unclear, and the meaning likely differs according to the bird, with nightjars possibly being regarded as 'stubborn', and others as being 'small brownish birds'.

The name Сүүллэг süülleg means 'large-tailed', related to the word for 'tail' сүүл süül. The name is clearly based on the Chinese name. However, the spelling of the bird name is differentiated from that for 'large-tailed' through doubling of the 'l'.

Харсуун kharsuuŋ or харсун kharsuŋ is found in the names of birds at the Accipitridae, Strigidae, and Sylviidae. The dictionary meaning is 'coarse', 'crude' (e.g. as used of foodstuffs), but in bird naming it appears to have the meaning 'hawk'.
