Chinese ornithological names for the campephagids are based on foreign models. There are a number of popular names for some campephagid species in China, but these tend to be restricted to southern provinces outside of Mandarin-speaking areas.
The campephagids as a whole are sometimes known as 毛虫鳥 'caterpillar bird' because caterpillars form an important part of their diet.
Taiwanese ornithological names of the family are:
1. 山椒鳥 'pricklyash bird' was previously used for all members of the family. The name was borrowed from Japanese, where 山椒食い sanshō-kui or 'pricklyash-eater' refers to the Ashy Minivet. This name is used in the earliest list of Chinese ornithological names, Birds of China (35) published in 1927.
The Japanese name is a reference to the bird's cry, which resembles the conventional sounds of distress made by a person eating very hot peppers, and has no connection to the actual consumption of pricklyash peppers.
2. Mainland Chinese ornithologists separate the cuckoo-shrikes (Campephaginae) from the minivets (Pericrocotinae), calling the former 鵑鵙 , quite literally 'cuckoo shrikes', a loan-translation (calque) of English 'cuckoo-shrike'. Taiwanese ornithological lists have adopted this name for the Pied Triller (Lalage nigra), which only recently entered Taiwanese bird lists. Other 'cuckoo-shrikes' are still known as 山椒鳥 'pricklyash bird'
