The Pellorneidae are a result of the break-up of the former Timaliidae assemblage. (Other families resulting from this break-up include the Timaliidae, Leiothrichidae, Pnoepygidae, and Vireonidae, and parts of the Zosteropidae and Sylviidae.)

The only member of the family in Taiwan is the Dusky Fulvetta (Schoeniparus brunneus), which bears what appears to be a traditional name, 頭烏線 tóu-wū-xiàn 'head black line'.

Family name

The Taiwanese family name, 雀眉科 què-méi kē means 'tit-babbler family'.

雀眉 què-méi comprises the word què, normally meaning 'sparrow' or 'finch' but here an abbreviation for 山雀 shan-què 'mountain-sparrow/finch' meaning 'tit', and méi meaning 'babbler'. is written according to Taiwanese convention with the character for 'eyebrow', reflecting the etymological origin of in the name of the Hwamei, 畫眉 huà-méi or 'painted eyebrow'.

In its original sense, 雀 què meant 'sparrow' in Chinese, although from a very early stage it came to be used for the finches. It also occurs in the name 山雀 shān-què 'mountain sparrow/finch', which is the ornithological name for the tits (Paridae). Here, 雀 què is an abbreviation for 山雀 shān-què ('tit'). 雀鹛 què-méi is, in fact, the Chinese equivalent of English 'tit babbler'.
