General
The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. The Pellorneidae are a result of the break-up of the former Timaliidae assemblage. (Other families resulting from this break-up include the Timaliidae, Leiothrichidae, Pnoepygidae, and Vireonidae, and parts of the Zosteropidae and Sylviidae.)
Members of the Pellorneidae go by four different names in Vietnamese.
1. A group of 'jungle babblers' (Malacopteron, Pellorneum, Trichastoma, and Malacocincla) are known as Chim Chuối tiêu, literally 'aromatic or Cavendish banana (birds)'. The connection (if any) between the birds and the fruit is unknown.
2. A number of genera are known as Khướư, a general and well-known Vietnamese term for various songbirds, notably laughing-thrushes. The extension of this name across families of the old Timaliidae assemblage to different kinds of babbler is probably an ornithological innovation. Within the Pellorneidae, the designation Khướư falls into several subtypes:
Khướư đuôi cụt 'short-tailed babbler' is used for the genus Rimator (in English styled a 'wren babbler').
Khướư đuôi dài 'long-tailed babbler' is used for the genus Gampsorhynchus (in English earlier styled a 'shrike babbler').
Khướư đá 'rock babbler' is used for the genera Turdinus and Napothera (in English styled 'wren babblers').
Khướư mỏ dài 'long-billed babbler' is used for the genus Jabouillera (in English styled a 'wren babbler').
3. The fulvettas (genus Schoeniparus) are known as Lách tách. The fulvettas no longer form a single group and the name is consequently now dispersed among three different families. In addition to the Pellorneidae, the name is used for Fulvettas in the Sylviidae (Lioparus and Fulvetta) and newly renamed Nun babblers in the Leiothrichidae (genus Alcippe).
4. The genus Graminicola, formerly a part of the Sylviidae assemblage, is named Chích đuôi dài 'long-tailed warbler'.

ศิวะ sì-wá 'Shiva' from Sanskrit and Pali śiva is the name of a popular Hindu god.
The name セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae and Sylviidae (Megalurus and Phylloscopus). The etymology of the name is unknown. It is written with the characters 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), which have been assigned on the basis of sound only and do not have any relation to meaning.
In its original sense, 雀 què meant 'sparrow' in Chinese, although from a very early stage it came to be used for the finches. It also occurs in the name 山雀 shān-què 'mountain sparrow/finch', which is the ornithological name for the tits (Paridae). Here, 雀 què is an abbreviation for 山雀 shān-què ('tit'). 雀鹛 què-méi is, in fact, the Chinese equivalent of English 'tit babbler'.
