Thai names of the Muscicapidae are ornithological in nature, based to a considerable extent on English or international models. Naming was originally standardised within two earlier families, Muscicapidae (flycatchers) and Saxicolidae (robins and chats) before they were folded into the current single family. Recent changes in taxonomy have blurred the previous clear internal separation between the two groups. In addition, two genera named as 'thrushes' have recently been transferred from the Turdidae.

As popular cage birds, the East Asian Magpie Robin (Copsychus saularis) and the White-rumped Shama (Kittacincla malabarica) have a number of popular names (recorded in (21)), many of which are onomatopoeic in nature (see table for details).

The main ornithological names are:

1. นกจับแมลง nók càp-ma-laeeŋ 'insect-catcher (bird)', probably a calque (loan-translation) from English, is used for most kinds of birds which were called 'flycatcher' in English at the time these names were assigned. This includes the genera Muscicapa, Cyornis, Anthipes, Cyanoptila, Eumyias, and Ficedula. Apart from the Muscicapidae, this name is also used for the Hypothymis monarch flycatchers (Monarchidae), canary- flycatchers (Stenostiridae), and the genus Philentoma (Vangidae). These are all called 'flycatchers' in English.

2. นกเขน nók kʰĕen 'robin (bird)', which is broadly equivalent to the English word 'robin', provides the basis for many of the old Saxicolidae names.

นกเขน nók kʰĕen 'robin (bird)' is used for redstarts (Phoenicurus, Phoenicuropsis, and Rhyacornis), water redstarts or river chats (Chaimarrornis), robins (Myiomela and Cinclidium), and wheatears (Oenanthe).

Larvivora robins and bush robins (Tarsiger, Calliope) are known as นกเขนน้อย nók kʰĕen-nóaay 'little-robin (bird)'. Outside the Muscicapidae, this name is also used for Hemipus flycatcher-shrikes (Vangidae) and Lalage trillers (Campephagidae).

The name of the magpie-robins (Copsychus) is นกกางเขน nók kaaŋ-kʰĕen 'magpierobin (bird)', similarly based on นกเขน nók kʰĕen 'robin (bird)'.

The shamas (Trichoxos, Kitticincla) are specified as นกกางเขนดง nók kaaŋ-kʰĕen doŋ 'jungle-magpierobin (bird)'.

Forktails (Enicurus) are known as นกกางเขนน้ำ nók kaaŋ-kʰĕen-náam 'water-magpierobin (bird)'.

Outside the Muscicapidae, นกกางเขน nók kaaŋ-kʰĕen 'magpierobin (bird)' has been extended to the visually similar Pica magpies (Corvidae).

3. The bush chats and stonechats (Saxicola) are known as นกยอดหญ้า nók-yôaat-yâa 'grass-tip bird'.

4. The Niltavas are known by the borrowed term นกนิลตวา nók nin-ta-waa 'niltava (bird)' (from English, ultimately from Nepali).

5. The Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica) is known as นกคอมรกต nók kʰoaa-moaa-ra-kòt 'emerald-necked bird'. The rubythroats (Calliope) are known as นกคอทับทิม nók kʰoaa-tʰáp-tʰim 'ruby-necked-bird'. Both are likely based on English.

6. The shortwings (Brachypterus) are known as นกปีกสั้น nók pìik-sân 'short-wing (bird)', also possibly a loan-translation from English or from the scientific name.

7. The rock thrushes (Monticola), previously placed with the thrushes (Turdidae), are known as เหล่านกกระเบื้อง nók krà-bêuaŋ 'tile bird'.

8. As in Malay, the Myophonus whistling thrush (also previously classed with the Turdidae) is named in Thai as a kind of large starling or myna (Sturnidae).

Family name

T he original Thai family name for the Muscicapidae, วงศ์นกจับแมลง woŋ nók càp-ma-laeeŋ, has been changed to วงศ์นกจับแมลงและนกเขน woŋ nók càp-ma-laeeŋ láe nók kʰĕen 'flycatcher and robin family'.

The Thai name for Muscicapa williamsoni is:
นกจับแมลงสีน้ำตาลท้องลาย
nók càp-ma-laeeŋ sĭi-nám-taan tʰóaaŋ-laay
'stripe-bellied brown insect-catcher (bird)'

The word oanh, from Chinese 鶯 yīng, traditionally refers to the Black-Naped Oriole. In ornithological Vietnamese it is also used for the robins.

ไพล pʰlay (Zingiber cassumunar, Zingiber montanum, or Zingiber purpureum) is a plant in the ginger family (Zingiberidae) widely used in traditional Thai medicine. Extracts typically have a greenish yellow to brown colour, and the name is used here as a colour word equivalent to English 'olivaceous'.

นกเขนน้อย nók kʰĕen-nóaay 'little-robin (bird)' includes not only Luscinia robins and bushrobins, but also Hemipus flycatcher-shrikes and Lalage trillers (both Campephagidae).

นกจับแมลง nók càp-ma-laeeŋ 'insect-catcher (bird)' is used for most kinds of birds which were called "flycatcher" in English at the time these names were assigned. These include all genera in the Muscicapinae (except Niltava); as well as Hypothymis monarch flycatchers (Monarchidae) and all species of Philentoma (gen. inc. sed)

Muscicapa dauurica williamsoni:
Burung Sambar Belantara
'wilderness snatcher (bird)' (belantara from Sanskrit) (24, 26)
