General
The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. Hover over Green Lettering Green lettering at this site hides a tool tip with glosses, further explanations, etc. Hover cursor to reveal. to see additional information.
Vietnamese ornithological names for the muscicapids include both calques (loan-translations) or coinages and what appear to be genuine popular names. The family includes species from both the original Muscicapidae (flycatchers) and Saxicolidae (robins and chats), plus two genera of 'thrush' that have recently been moved from the Turdidae.
Vietnamese names for the Muscicapidae can be divided into six groups:
1. Chim đớp ruồi, literally 'fly-snapping bird', is probably based on English 'flycatcher' or French gobemouche. It is used for birds that are, with the exception of the Niltavas, known in English as 'flycatchers': Muscicapa, Cyornis, Niltava, Anthipes, Cyanoptila, Eumyias, and Ficedula, plus (in one source) a member of the genus Larvivora (robins). Outside the Muscicapidae, it is used for Hypothymis monarch flycatchers (Monarchidae), Philentoma (Vangidae) and canary-flycatchers (Stenostiridae).
2. Oanh is used as a broad equivalent to the English word 'robin'. It is derived from the Chinese word (鶯) 'oriole' and is also used for the orioles in non-ornithological Vietnamese. It has been extended to the robins in ornithological (and possibly also popular) naming, presumably because the robins are, like the orioles, noted songbirds. Genera covered were all formerly in the Saxicolinae: Larvivora, Luscinia svecica, Cinclidium, Calliope, Myiomela, and Tarsiger.
3. Chích chòe is a popularly-based name used for the Magpie Robin (Copsychus saularis) and the local shama species (Kittacincla malabarica).
The forktails (genus Enicurus) are known as Chích chòe nước 'water magpierobin'. (An alternative name for the forktails given by some non-specialist dictionaries is Chim bù chao.)
4. Chim đuôi đỏ 'red-tail bird' is used for the redstarts, including the genera Phoenicuropsis, Rhyacornis, Chaimarrornis, and Phoenicurus.
5. Sẻ bụi, literally 'bush-sparrow' or 'bush-finch', is the name given to the stonechats and bush chats (Saxicola). The name appears to be a calque on English.
6. Some genera originally placed with the Turdidae are known as Hoét 'thrush'. They include:
The shortwings (Brachypteryx and Heteroxenicus), known as Hoét đuôi cụt 'short-tailed thrush',
The whistling thrushes (Myophonus), known as Hoét xanh 'blue/green thrush',
The rock thrushes (Monticola), known as Hoét đá 'rock thrush',
One redstart (Luscinia phaenicuroides, formerly belonging to the genus Hodgsonius), known as Hoét đuôi dài 'long-tailed thrush'.
TVC (34) makes considerable changes to the earlier ornithological naming, which mainly impact on the descriptors used.
