The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. The Zosteropidae consist of the white-eyes (Zosterops) and the yuhinas (Yuhina), the latter long considered a part of the Timaliidae assemblage.
1. The ornithological name of the white-eyes is Chim vành khuyên, where vành means 'rim'. They are popularly known as Chim khuyên, where khuyên means 'circle' (from Chinese 圈 ), probably related to the circles around the birds' eyes. Another apparent name is Chim sâu nghệ (literally 'turmeric flowerpecker bird'). In Central Vietnam the white-eyes are known as Chim nghệ 'turmeric-bird', normally given to the ioras.
2. The yuhinas are known as Khướư mào 'crested-babbler', where Khướư is a general name for babblers in the old Timaliidae assemblage. The name Khướư mào 'crested-babbler' is also used for the Erpornis, now placed with the Vireonidae.
