The Zosteropidae consist of the white-eyes (Zosterops) and the yuhinas (Yuhina), the latter long considered to belong to the Timaliidae assemblage.
Chinese has several popular or vernacular names for the white-eyes. One is 绣眼鸟 , meaning 'embroidered-eye bird', also seen in the form 绣眼 'embroidered-eye'. In Beijing, they are known as 粉眼儿 'powder-eye' or 粉眼 'powder-eye'. This is listed as a ‘northern name’ in (35). Another alternative name is 白眼儿 'white eye'.
The ornithological names given to the white-eyes and yuhinas are:
1. 绣眼鸟 , meaning 'embroidered-eye bird', is the preferred ornithological form for the white-eyes. This is also seen in the form 绣眼 , meaning 'embroidered-eye', and was proposed as an ornithological name in the 1927 list of Chinese Birds (35).
2. The yuhinas are known as 凤鹛 'phoenix-babbler', where 凤 'phoenix' is a standard way of referring to birds with crests, and 鹛 is the standard ornithological term for babblers. 鹛 was derived from the 眉 'eyebrow' in 画眉 'painted eyebrow', the Hwamei or Melodious Laughing-Thrush, and generalised to the old Timaliidae assemblage. The character 鹛 consists of 眉 'eyebrow' combined with the bird radical 鸟. Outside the Zosteropidae, the Erpornis (Vireonidae), formerly placed with the yuhinas, still bears the name 凤鹛 'phoenix-babbler'.
The original proposed name for the yuhinas in (35) was 优西纳 , a loose transliteration of English.
