General

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. The Vireonidae are principally a New World family but now contain two Asian genera from the old Timaliidae assemblage: Pteruthius (the shrike babblers) and Erpornis (formerly regarded as a yuhina). Both are ornithologically known as Khướư, a general and well-known term for various kinds of babbler (former Timaliidae assemblage) in Vietnamese.

The names the two genera are as follows:

1. The Pteruthius shrike babblers are known as Khướư mỏ quặp 'bent-billed babbler'.

2. The Erpornis (Epornis zantholeuca) is known as Khướư mào 'crested babbler', reflecting its earlier identification with the yuhinas (Zosteropidae).

Family name

The family name is from the Vietnamese-language Internet and directly uses the Latin scientific name.
