General
The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. Hover over Green Lettering Green lettering at this site hides a tool tip with glosses, further explanations, etc. Hover cursor to reveal. to see additional information.
The Timaliidae are a result of the break-up of the former Timaliidae assemblage. (Others include the Pellorneidae, Leiothrichidae, Pnoepygidae, and Vireonidae, and parts of the Zosteropidae and Sylviidae.)
Members of the reduced Timaliidae go by three different names in Vietnamese.
1. A number of genera are known as Khướư, a well-known term for various songbirds (notably varieties of laughing-thrush). In what was probably an ornithological innovation, the name came to be used for babblers in general. Ornithologically, the names are subdivided into:
Khướư đất 'ground babbler': Spelaeornis and Elachura, traditionally known in English as 'wren babblers'. This name is also used for the 'wren babblers' at Pnoepyga (Pnoepygidae).
Khướư bụi 'bush babbler': Used for Stachyris and Cyanoderma (Tree babblers).
Khướư mỏ cong 'curved-billed babbler': Xiphirhynchus scimitar babbler, now placed with Pomatorhinus.
2. The Chestnut-capped Babbler (Timalia pileata) and the scimitar babblers (Erythrogenys and Pomatorhinus, excepting former Xiphirhynchus) are called Họa mi. This is the name of the most famous of the laughing-thrushes, the Hwamei or Melodious Laughing Thrush (Garrulax canorus, Leiothrichidae), and is derived from the Chinese name of the Hwamei, 畫眉 'painted eyebrow'. Besides Timalia pileata, the Yellow-eyed Babbler (genus Chrysomma in the Sylviidae) is also known as a type of Họa mi.
3. Members of the genus Mixornis (formerly Macronous) are known by the unique onomatopoeic name Chích chạch.

The word Họa mi is a borrowing from Chinese 畫眉 huà-méi 'painted-eyebrow', the name of the Hwamei or Melodious Laughing-thrush. In Vietnamese, in addition to the Hwamei itself (Leiothrichidae), it has been applied ornithologically to the Chestnut-capped Babbler and scimitar babblers (Timaliidae) and the Yellow-eyed Babbler (Sylviidae).
ศิวะ sì-wá 'Shiva' from Sanskrit and Pali śiva is the name of a popular Hindu god.
