The Timaliidae are one of the main families resulting from the break-up of the former Timaliidae assemblage. (Others include the Pellorneidae, Leiothrichidae, Pnoepygidae, and Vireonidae, and parts of the Zosteropidae and Sylviidae.)

Most genera in the Timaliidae (Stachyris, Timalia, Mixornis, Macronous, and Cyanoderma) are simply named นกกินแมลง nók kin-ma-laeeŋ 'insect-eating bird' or 'insectivorous bird', a general ornithological term corresponding to English 'babbler'. กินแมลง kin-ma-laeeŋ is the regular Thai equivalent of English 'insectivorous' and can be used to describe any creature which eats insects.

There are a few genera which make use of more traditional or popular Thai names:

Scimitar babblers (Pomatorhinus and Erythrogenys) are called นกระวังไพร nók rá-waŋ-pʰray 'woods-sentry (bird)'. This is only one of several popular names for these birds, whose raucous alarm calls serve also to warn other wild creatures and people alike. Other names include ระวังวัน rá-waŋ-wan 'day-sentry'; ตระเวนไพร trà-ween-pʰray 'woods-patroller'; and ตระเวนวัน trà-ween-wan 'day-patroller'.

Wren-babblers (Spelaeornis and Elachura) are called นกจู๋เต้น nók cŭu têen 'dancing very-short bird'. Following the break-up of the Timaliidae assemblage, five genera of 'wren-babbler' bearing the same name are now placed in other families: Pnoepyga (Pnoepygidae) and Kenopia, Turdinus, and Napothera (Pellorneidae). Note: Elachura has recently been placed in its own separate family, the Elachuridae.

Family name

The family name used here, วงศ์นกกินแมลง nók kin-ma-laeeŋ 'insect-eater (bird)', is based on the Thai generic name for the babblers.

The word Họa mi is a borrowing from Chinese 畫眉 huà-méi 'painted-eyebrow', the name of the Hwamei or Melodious Laughing-thrush. In Vietnamese, in addition to the Hwamei itself (Leiothrichidae), it has been applied ornithologically to the Chestnut-capped Babbler and scimitar babblers (Timaliidae) and the Yellow-eyed Babbler (Sylviidae).

Deignan's Babbler (Stachyris rodelphei or Stachyridopsis, now subsumed under Cyanoderma rufifrons, is known as: นกกินแมลงเด็กแนน
