The Scotocercidae are a result of the break-up of the Sylviidae assemblage. (Others include the Locustellidae, Phylloscipidae, and Acrocephalidae, as well as part of the Sylviidae.) The family includes the Leafworker or Mountain Tailorbird, originally placed in Orthotomus (Cisticolidae).

The original collective Thai name for warblers and the other smallest insect-eating native birds was the onomatopoetic term นกกระจิบ nók krà-cìp ('krà-cìp bird'). Today นกกระจิบ nók krà-cìp is ornithologically restricted to tailorbirds and prinias in the family Cisticolidae.

Current warbler names were largely coined by a Thai ornithologist. Each name covered several large groups within the old Sylviidae.

Most species in the Scotocercidae use the most widely applied ornithological name for the warblers, นกกระจ้อย nók krà-côaay 'very-small bird', which was created from the adjective (กระ)จ้อย (krà-)côaay 'tiny, very small, etc.'. It is used for the genera Urosphena, Cettia, Hemitesia, Abroscopus, and Horornis. This name is also used for the former Bradypterus warblers (Locustellidae), some members of the genus Seicercus (Phylloscopidae), and the Gerygone fly-eaters or wren warblers (Acanthizidae). Recently in (23), a new name, กกระจ้อยดง nók krà-côaay doŋ, intended as 'jungle-warbler', has been suggested for Cettia and Urosphena bush warblers, but it is not currently used in species names.

For the ground warblers or tesias (Tesia) another diminutive adjective, (จุน)จู๋ (cun-)cŭu 'very short', was adopted in นกจุนจู๋ nók cun-cŭu 'very-short bird'.

The Leafworker or Mountain Tailorbird uses the Thai name for the tailorbirds (now in the Cisticolidae): นกกระจิบภูเขา nók krà-cìp pʰuu-kʰăw.

Family name

The family name used here is based on the proposed name for the Cetiidae in (23): วงศ์นกกระจ้อยดงและนกจุนจู๋ woŋ nók krà-côaay doŋ láe nók cun-cŭu 'jungle-warbler and tesia family'.

セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae, Locustellidae, and Phylloscopidae. The etymology is unknown. It is written with the ateji 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), characters assigned on the basis of sound only with little or no relation to etymology or meaning.

The characters used to write ヤブサメ yabu-same, 藪雨 or 藪鮫, mean 'thicket rain' or 'thicket shark' respectively. The second character in each appears to be used purely for its sound. The character 雨 is normally read ame ('rain'), but may be read -same in combination. The etymology of the name is unknown, although one conjecture is that it means 'be noisy in the thicket', using the verb さめく sameku 'to be noisy'.

ไพล pʰlay (Zingiber cassumunar, Zingiber montanum, or Zingiber purpureum) is a plant in the ginger family (Zingiberidae) widely used in traditional Thai medicine. Extracts typically have a greenish yellow to brown colour, and the name is used here as a colour word equivalent to English 'olivaceous'.

นาค nâak 'naga', from Sanskrit and Pali nāgá, is the name of a deity or kind of being taking the form of a huge snake, sometimes with multiple heads. Here the graduated tail feathers of Megaluris palustris suggest the traditional representation of the heads of a multiheaded naga.
