The Scotocercidae are a result of the break-up of the large Sylviidae (Old World warbler) assemblage. (Other families arising from this break-up include the Locustellidae, Phylloscipidae, and Acrocephalidae, as well as part of the Sylviidae.)
Like other former members of the Sylviidae, the Scotocercidae bear the name 鶯 , which is the Chinese ornithological equivalent of English 'warbler'. (Note that 鶯 is not likely to be used on its own, especially in speech, as it is homophonous with 'eagle' or 鷹 .) The traditional meaning of 鶯 in Chinese is oriole; it was ornithologically adopted for the sylviid warblers under the influence of the Sylviidae in Japanese, which bore the family name 鶯科 uguisu-ka. This reflects the poetic identification of Japan's native Japanese Bush Warbler or uguisu (Horornis diphone) with China's oriole (see 'Of Orioles and Warblers').
The Taiwanese names of the Scotocercidae have not been regularised according to genus, and apart from the shared use of 鶯 there is little to link the names together.
Family name
Howard and Moore 2014 use the name Scotocercidae for this family, from the genus Scotocerca, represented by one species (Streaked Scrub Warbler) in the Middle East. This species is known in Chinese as 紋鷦鶯 (literally 'patterned wren warbler'). However, the current preferred practice appears to be to use the name Cetiidae (樹鶯科 'tree-warblers'), based on the names of two prominent members of the genus Cettia (now assigned to Horornis). The current naming suggests Mainland Chinese influence.

セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae, Locustellidae, and Phylloscopidae. The etymology is unknown. It is written with the ateji 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), characters assigned on the basis of sound only with little or no relation to etymology or meaning.
The characters used to write ヤブサメ yabu-same, 藪雨 or 藪鮫, mean 'thicket rain' or 'thicket shark' respectively. The second character in each appears to be used purely for its sound. The character 雨 is normally read ame ('rain'), but may be read -same in combination. The etymology of the name is unknown, although one conjecture is that it means 'be noisy in the thicket', using the verb さめく sameku 'to be noisy'.
