The Lonchura (munia or mannikins) are known in Chinese as 文鸟 wén-niǎo, which may be loosely translated as 'culture-bird' or 'literature bird'.

The Red Munia or Red Amandava Amandava amandava, popular for its red colour, is known in Chinese as the 梅花雀 méi-huā-què 'plum-flower finch' or 红花雀 hóng-huā-què 'red flower sparrow'. The adult male's typical pattern of white spots on a red background is known as 梅花 méi-huā 'plum flower' in Chinese. The sika or spotted deer (Cervus nippon) is known as the 梅花鹿 méi-huā-lù 'plum-flower deer' for a similar reason.

The introduced Java Sparrow has become widely established in southern China. It is known as the 禾雀 hé-què 'grain sparrow' or 爪哇雀 zhǎowā què 'Java sparrow'.

Шоо shoo is used in the Mongolian name of the sika or spotted deer (Cervus nippon). The deer is known in Chinese as the 梅花鹿 méihuā-lù or 'plum-flower deer' due to its reddish sides with white spots. Mongolian mimics Chinese usage by extending the name to the Amandava amandava.

The meaning of Болжмор boljmor differs between Mongolia, where it is used for the larks, and Inner Mongolia, where it means 'sparrow'. In this instance Болжмор boljmor is being used in the Inner Mongolian sense as an equivalent of the Chinese morpheme què, originally meaning 'sparrow' but now used as a general name for small birds.
