The Mongolian ornithological name for the thrushes is Хөөндэй khööndei. This word is missing from many ordinary dictionaries (and not found at all in Inner Mongolian dictionaries) and possibly represents an ornithological specialisation of a minor or local name.
In the 2007 "binomial names", the genus Turdus (including current Geokichla) was assigned the name Хөөндэй khööndei, and the genus Zoothera (one species only, Zoothera dauma) was assigned the variant Хөөндий khööndii.
In Inner Mongolia, the thrushes are known as Таргалж targalj. The latter is found in the Imperial Pentaglot Manchu Mirror (37) of 1805 as an equivalent to Chinese 穿草鸡 'come through the grass fowl/chicken', a colloquial term for the Dusky Thrush. It has ornithologically been generalised to all thrushes. The name is used for some species in other families known as 鸫 dōng 'thrush' in Chinese, notably Monticola (Rock Thrushes) in the Muscicapidae.

The species is a relatively rare winter visitor to Japan. The name is apparently due to the capture of a specimen on Hachijo-jima, the southernmost of the Izu Islands.
