The modern Chinese ornithological name for the thrushes is dōng. This name was borrowed from Japanese and is not necessarily in wide popular use.

Traditionally the character was used in the obscure old word 鸫鵛 dōng-jīng, which refers to the Wryneck (woodpecker). It was later pressed into service in Japanese to write the native word ツグミ tsugumi 'thrush' in the absence of a suitable alternative. The Japanese was borrowed into Chinese via the early ornithological list Chinese Birds of 1927 (35), which consistently used dōng as an equivalent to English 'thrush'.

Prior to the ornithological naming, Chinese had several names for thrushes.

chun wū-chūn was a name for the Blackbird (Turdus mandarinus), a bird commonly found in China.

Another old name for the Blackbird is 百舌 bǎi-shé 'hundred tongues' due to its versatile song. (In Japanese 百舌 is used to write the name of the shrikes.)

The Dusky Thrush was known in folk usage as the 穿草鸡 chuān-cǎo-jī 'come through the grass fowl/chicken' or 窜儿鸡 cuànr-jī, suggesting that it is a kind of chicken or fowl. The Dusky Thrush is known for its tasty flavour.

The ornithological names of the Turdidae have been completely regularised using the character dōng.

1. dōng 'thrush' itself is used for the genera Turdus and Geokichla (originally all in Turdus).

2. 歌鸫 gē-dōng 'song-thrush' is used for several species in the genera Otocichla and Turdus (originally all in Turdus, some known as 'song thrushes' in English).

3. 地鸫 dì-dōng 'ground-thrush' is used for thrushes in the genus Zoothera.

4. 宽嘴鸫 kuān-zuǐ-dōng 'broad-billed thrush' is used for the Cochoas (genus Cochoa).

Several genera originally classed with the Turdidae that bear the name dōng 'thrush' in Chinese and 'thrush' in English have since been transferred to the Muscicapidae. They include 短翅鸫 duǎn-chì-dōng 'short-winged thrush' for the shortwings (Brachtyperus), 啸鸫 xiào-dōng 'whistling-thrush' for the whistling-thrushes (Myophonus), and 矶鸫 jī-dōng 'rocky-shore thrush' for the rock thrushes (Monticola).
