Names for the Muscicapidae in Mongolian are relatively diverse. A number of names, particularly those used in Inner Mongolia, can be found in sources like the Qing-era Imperial Pentaglot Manchu Mirror (37). However, there is clear regional variation in the usage of names, which has at times been exacerbated by developments in ornithological naming systems.

Mongolian ornithological names

The earlier ornithological names of the Muscicapidae ran parallel to general international naming, as opposed to strict taxonomic naming. The names and their scope of application were as follows:

1. Намнаахай namnaakhai (also found in the form Намнаагай namnaagai) was used for the flycatchers (Muscicapa and Ficedula).

2. Гургалдай gurgaldai (or Гургуулдай gurguuldai) was used for the robins (now Larvivora, Luscinia, and Calliope). However, traditionally Гургалдай gurgaldai appears to have been used as a general term for conspicuous songbirds like nightingales and orioles, often in the form Алтан гургалдай altaŋ gurgaldai (or Алтан гургуулдай altaŋ gurguuldai).

3. Хөх зоот khökh zoot 'darkblue back' was used for the Orange-flanked Bush Robin (Tarsiger cyanurus).

4. Redstarts (now Phoenicuropsis and Phoenicurus) were known as Гал сүүлт gal süült 'fire tailed'.

5. Шулганаа shulagnaa was used for the bushchats/stonechats (Saxicola). This term is not found in Inner Mongolian dictionaries.

6. Чогчоохой chogchookhoi was used for the wheatears (Oenanthe). This term is also absent from Inner Mongolian dictionaries.

7. Хөөндэй khööndei 'thrush' was used for the rock-thrushes, which originally belonged to the Turdidae.

The "binomial" names of 2007 made some changes to this picture:

1. With Хөөндэй khööndei 'thrush' now strictly confined to the Turdidae (Turdus), the Monticola rock-thrushes have been given the name Жижир jijir. Dictionaries give the meaning as a kind of 'yellow-eared thrush'.

2. The Petrophila rock-thrushes have been given the name Донгор dongor, a term not listed in dictionaries in this sense, although one Inner Mongolian dictionary uses it for the plovers. It may be related to the verb донгодох doŋgodokh 'to sing' (used specifically for bird song).

3. Чогчиго chogchig has been substituted for Чогчоохой chogchookhoi as the name of the wheatears. However, in Inner Mongolia this name is used for the shrikes.

4. Намнаахай namnaakhai has been truncated to Намнаа namnaa as a separate name for the Ficedula flycatchers.

Inner Mongolia

Inner Mongolian ornithological usage diverges considerably from Mongolia, although recently there has been a certain amount of convergence under the influence of Mongolian names. The main names used are:

1. Намнаахай namnaakhai is confined to the Muscicapa flycatchers. This is the only name shared with Mongolian usage.

2. Хятруу khyatruu 'robin' is an old name used ornithologically for the robins (Larvivora, Luscinia, Tarsiger), although at least one species is also called Гургалдай gurgaldai. Хятруу khyatruu is found in the Imperial Pentaglot Manchu Mirror (37) of 1805, where Хөх хятруу khökh khyatruu 'darkblue robin' is used for the Bluethroat (Luscinia svecica) or possibly the Siberian Blue Robin (Larvivora cyane) and Улаан хятруу ulaaŋ khyatruu 'blue robin' for the Siberian Rubythroat (Calliope calliope).

One name for the redstarts is Ал сүүлт хятруу al süült khyatruu 'red-tailed robin'. However, the naming of redstarts is inconsistent, partly because of recent influence from Mongolian names.

Хятруулаг khyatruulag 'robin-like' or Хятруулаг намнаахай khyatruulag namnaakhai 'robin-like flycatcher' is used for the Ficedula flycatchers.

3. Тонголзуур toŋgolzuur 'bower' is used for the wheatears. The name is related to the verb тонголзох toŋgolzokh meaning 'to bob' or 'to bow'.

4. The rock-thrushes are called Хадны таргалж khadni targalj 'rock thrush', a direct translation of 'rock thrush' as used in English and Chinese. Other species known as 'thrushes' in English and Chinese and previously classed with the Turdidae are also called Таргалж targalj 'thrush'.

The name Гургалдай gurgaldai is traditionally applied to a range of birds famous for their song, including orioles, robins, and nightingales. Ornithologically it has been restricted to the meaning 'robin' in the Mongolian names. Here it is arbitrarily glossed as 'robin1', but it should be kept in mind that the actual meaning is far broader.

The name чогчиго chogchig appears to have been pressed into service as a variant of чогчоохой chogchookhoi. However, it is not clear whether this name traditionally belongs to the chats. In Inner Mongolia it is used for the shrikes.

The name Тонголзуур tonggolzuur is related to the verb тонголзох tonggolzokh, which means to repeatedly bow or stoop down and stand back up again. In (31) the name is spelt toNgoljoor in the traditional script, but can also be found spelt toNgoljagor.
