General
The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. The Leiothrichidae are one of the main families resulting from the break-up of the former Timaliidae assemblage. (Others include the Timaliidae, Pellorneidae, Pnoepygidae, and Vireonidae, and parts of the Zosteropidae and Sylviidae.)
The main names of the Leiothrichidae in Vietnamese are:
1. Chim khướư, a popular general term for various kinds of babblers, particularly the laughing thrushes, which are well-known cage birds.
Among birds known as Khướư, the barwings are known ornithologically as Khướư vằn 'striped babbler' and the minlas as Khướư lùn 'dwarf babbler'.
2. Several of the better known laughing-thrushes have their own unique names.
The most famous of the laughing thrushes, the Hwamei or Melodious Laughing Thrush (Garrulax canorus) is known as Họa mi, borrowed from Chinese 畫眉 'painted eyebrow'. This name has been extended ornithologically to birds in two other families, namely, Timaliidae: Timalia, Pomatorhinus, Erythrogenys (Chestnut-capped Babbler, scimitar babblers), and Sylviidae: Chrysomma (Babbler).
The Masked Laughing Thrush (Garrulax perspicillatus) is known as Bò chao and Liếu điếu,
The White-browed Laughing Thrush (Garrulax sannio), known as the Bò chiêu.
However, neither Bò chao nor Bò chiêu is found in generalist dictionaries.
3. Related to Họa mi is the term Mi, which appears to be from Chinese 鶥 'babbler' and is used for sibia species.
4. Mesias and leiothrix are known as Kim oanh, literally 'gold oriole' (related to Chinese 金鶯 'gold oriole'). Oanh is also used for robins in Vietnamese.
5. Lách tách is a name applied to the fulvettas (Alcippe) -- renamed 'nun babblers' in the Leiothrichidae -- which have now been split among three families: the Leiothrichidae, Pellorneidae, and Sylviidae.
Family name
Following Vietnamese Wikipedia, we've adopted Họ Kim oanh (named after the genus Leiothrix) as the family name in Vietnamese.

ศิวะ sì-wá 'Shiva' from Sanskrit and Pali śiva is the name of a popular Hindu god.
In its original sense, 雀 què meant 'sparrow' in Chinese, although from a very early stage it came to be used for the finches. It also occurs in the name 山雀 shān-què 'mountain sparrow/finch', which is the ornithological name for the tits (Paridae). Here, 雀 què is an abbreviation for 山雀 shān-què ('tit'). 雀鹛 què-méi is, in fact, the Chinese equivalent of English 'tit babbler'.
The term 畫眉鳥 gabi-chō 'painted-eyebrow-bird' is from Chinese 畫眉 huà-méi 'painted-eyebrow', which primarily refers to the Hwamei or Melodious Laughing-thrush (Leiothrichidae). It has been extended in ornithological Japanese to many of the laughing-thrushes (Garrulax and related genera) and occasionally other families.
The word Họa mi is a borrowing from Chinese 畫眉 huà-méi 'painted-eyebrow', the name of the Hwamei or Melodious Laughing-thrush. In Vietnamese, in addition to the Hwamei itself, it has been applied ornithologically to the Chestnut-capped Babbler and scimitar babblers (Timaliidae) and the Yellow-eyed Babbler (Sylviidae).
