General

Information is from dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin reflects Mandarin pronunciation; for some dialect names, it is no more than a polite fiction. Korean glosses are tentative. Comments and corrections welcome. Hover over Green Lettering Green lettering at this site hides a tool tip with glosses, further explanations, etc. Hover cursor to reveal. to see additional information.

English is amazingly rich in words for the Scolopacidae. In contrast, in Chinese are covered by just two general names, of which one is mostly ornithological.

In Taiwan, is ornithologically used for all Scolopacidae.

The ornithological Taiwanese names of the Scolopacidae are very close to the Japanese, from which the Mainland authorities have moved away. This process entails both the substitution of more Chinese-sounding names (e.g., 红脚鹬 hóng-jiǎo yù 'red-legged snipe' for 赤足鹬 chì-zú yù 'red-legged snipe') and the partial regularisation of existing names to accord with scientific genera. For instance, the term 滨鹬 bīn-yù 'shore-snipe', from Japanese 浜鷸 hama-shigi, has been expanded from the Dunlin and one other species to virtually all members of the genus Calidris.

Ornithological naming

The regularised names are as follows:

Scolopax 丘鹬
qiū-yù
'hill snipe' (山鹬 shān-yù also used but superseded in ornithological lists)
Gallinago 沙锥
(沙錐)
shā zhuī
'sand-drill' (a more obscure term than ,
still not found in many general dictionaries)
Tringa
'snipe'
Limosa 塍鹬
chéng-yù
'paddy-path snipe'
Numenius 杓鹬
sháo-yù
'spoon-snipe'
Tattlers 漂鹬
piāo-yù
'floating snipe'
Limnodromus 半蹼鹬
bàn-pǔ yù
'half-webbed snipe'
Calidris 滨鹬
bīn-yù
'shore-snipe'
Phalaropus 瓣蹼鹬
bàn-pǔ yù
'web-footed snipe'

The Mainland names show occasional contradictions with the Taiwanese names. 大杓鹬 dà sháo-yù 'large spoon-snipe' refers to Numenius arquata on the Mainland and N. madagascariencis in Taiwan. The term 漂鷸 piāo-yù 'floating snipe' originally referred to Tringa incana (Heteroscelus incanus) on the Mainland and Calidris canutus on Taiwan, although the Taiwanese name has now been changed to conform with the Mainland name.

CULTURAL

The Chinese have a proverb: 鹬蚌相争,渔人得利 yù bàng xiāng zhēng, yúrén dé lì. 'The yu and the clam struggle together; the fisherman makes the gain'. This derives from an old story of a snipe/sandpiper who had put his bill inside the clam's shell in order to eat the clam. The clam countered by clamping his shell tightly onto the bird's bill. The two were locked in a battle that neither could win. Along came the fisherman and claimed the both of them. The moral of the story is obvious.

Both the Japanese and Vietnamese have borrowed this proverb.

Хомноот khomnoot literally means 'having a khomnoo', where a khomnoo or khom refers either to the felt pad that is placed underneath the saddle or pack on a camel's back, or stocks placed over livestock's head. It is possible that the pattern on the woodcock's back or head is suggestive of these items.

Замба zamba has at least three meanings: 1. It forms part of the name of a kind of lizard, Замба гүрвэл zamba gürvel, the Mongolian Rock Agama (Laudakia stoliczkana), 2. the Mallow (Malva neglecta), or 3. a fence. The rationale for the bird name is unclear.

Listed incorrectly as 大沙雉 dà-shāzhì 'large sand-pheasant' in (31).
