The Chinese name for the nightjars is 夜鹰 yè-yīng 'night-hawk', which is possibly from Japanese, borrowed as the written form 夜鹰 and read in the Chinese way. A traditional name for the caprimulgids is 蚊母鸟 wén-mǔ-niǎo 'mosquito mother bird'.

No ordinary dictionaries carry this word. The Cyrillic spelling and pronunciation are no more than an educated but quite easily incorrect guess.

The word ヨタカ yo-taka can traditionally be written in several ways in Japanese. 1. The straightforward use of characters to represent the components of the word, i.e. 夜鷹 ( yo 'night' + taka 'hawk'); 2. Borrowing of the characters for the equivalent Chinese name as a single unit, i.e., 蚊母鳥 'mosquito mother bird'; and 3. A different set of Chinese characters that presumably also referred to the nightjars in Chinese, 怪鴟 , literally 'strange hawk' (original meaning) or 'strange owl' (more recent meaning).

Бор bor as an adjective means either 'grey, brown, dun', or 'stubborn'. It is used in some bird names as a noun, including names for the nightjars, reed warblers, Reed Parrotbill, and leiothrix. The common thread is unclear, and the meaning likely differs according to the bird, with nightjars possibly being regarded as 'stubborn', and others as being 'small brownish birds'.
