The Locustellidae are a result of the split-up of the old Sylviidae (Old World warbler) assemblage. (Others include the Acrocephalidae and Phylloscipidae, as well as part of the Sylviidae.)
Names are largely ornithological in nature as these small, inconspicuous birds were always poorly served by vernacular names. Under Howard and Moore 2014, Mongolia is home to only one genus, Locustella, but ornithological names derive from three earlier genera: Locustella, Bradypterus, and Megalurus, resulting in a mix of names.
Ornithological names
Mongolian names for the Locustellidae are as follows:
1. Locustella: These are known in Mongolia as Шатансүүлт shataŋ-süült 'laddertail' for the shape of their tails. Prior to 2007 the name was written as two words: Шатан сүүлт shataŋ süült 'ladder-tail'.
2. Formerly Megalurus: Previously Megalurus pryeri was named as a kind of reed warbler (Охил бялзуухай okhil byalzuukhai 'okhil finch', where бялзуухай byalzuukhai is a general term for a small songbird, sparrow, or finch). In the revised ornithological names of 2007 it was renamed Ажиндар ajindar, which originally appears to have referred to a kind of lark.
3. Formerly Bradypterus: Species in this group are known as Цоохондой tsookhondoi. The name is possibly a variant of Цоогондой tsoogondoi, a type of wildcat, and may suggest a spotted or motley appearance.
Words in this family that are hard to account for include гуймхий guimkhii (in Гуймхий шатан сүүлт guimkhii shataŋ süült) and охил (in Охил бялзуухай okhil byalzuukhai).
Inner Mongolia
Inner Mongolia has different naming for Locustella and Megalurus but shares a common source for the name of the genus Bradypterus:
1. Locustella: The Inner Mongolian name, Царцаахайч tsartsaakhaich 'locustlike', is from Царцаахай tsartsaakhai 'locust', modelled either on the scientific name (Locustella), or on the Chinese name (蝗莺 'grasshopper warbler'), which is in turn modelled on English. The suffix -ч -ch is not entirely determinate as to meaning; it could also be interpreted as 'locust-catcher' or 'locust-eater'.
2. Formerly Megalurus: In Inner Mongolia Megalurus pryeri is known as Сүүллэг süülleg, derived by adding the suffix лэг -leg to the word сүүл süül 'tail'.
3. Bradypterus: Originally known in Inner Mongolia as Цоохондой tsookhondoi but renamed Цоохолдой tsookholdoi in our current standard (33).

セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae, Locustellidae, and Phylloscopidae. The etymology is unknown. It is written with the ateji 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), characters assigned on the basis of sound only with little or no relation to etymology or meaning.
Sennyū, a term for grasshopper-warblers, is of unknown etymology. It is written with characters meaning 'enter fairy' or 'infiltrate'. The characters function as ateji, an attempt to represent the pronunciation with characters that have little or no relationship to the meaning or etymology.
Бор bor as an adjective means either 'grey, brown, dun', or 'stubborn'. It is used in some bird names as a noun, including names for the nightjars, reed warblers, Reed Parrotbill, and leiothrix. The common thread is unclear, and the meaning likely differs according to the bird, with nightjars possibly being regarded as 'stubborn', and others as being 'small brownish birds'.
The name Сүүллэг süülleg means 'large-tailed', related to the word for 'tail' сүүл süül. The name is clearly based on the Chinese name. However, the spelling of the bird name is differentiated from that for 'large-tailed' through doubling of the 'l'.
Харсуун kharsuuŋ or харсун kharsuŋ is found in the names of birds at the Accipitridae, Strigidae, and Sylviidae. The dictionary meaning is 'coarse', 'crude' (e.g. as used of foodstuffs), but in bird naming it appears to have the meaning 'hawk'.
